Criminal Defense

Looking for a St. Louis criminal defense attorney? Brent Sumner of The Sumner Law Group is an experienced criminal defense attorney that can help you. Mr. Sumner has tried numerous jury trials and can help you if you've been charged with a felony or misdemeanor.

Mr. Sumner is currently defending a client that is charged with distributing/trafficking heroin. A criminal informant provided information to the police regarding a potential sale of drugs. A recent United States Supreme Court case captioned Florida v. J.L., 529 U.S. 266 (2000) held that an anonymous tip that a person is carrying drugs or a gun is not, without more, sufficient to justify a police officer's stop and frisk of that person. Mr. Sumner is challenging whether or not the police had "enough" to stop and search his client. Mr. Sumner questioned the police officers involved in this arrest regarding the facts of the stop and filed a motion to dismiss the case. Currently there is a Motion to Suppress the Evidence waiting to be argued by Mr. Sumner in front of the St. Louis City Circuit Court regarding the fact that the police did not have "enough" probable cause to stop and search Mr. Sumner's client.
